Jonathan Yeo is renowned for his distinctive portraits and one of the most prominent portrait painters of our time. His sitters have included many cultural and political icons including Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry, Kevin Spacey, Dennis Hopper, Sienna Miller, Tony Blair and Malala Yousafzai.
In his recent painting of ‘Tamara Rojo’ (2015), ballet dancer and Artistic Director of the English National Ballet, Yeo articulates her personality through her expressive face and tense yet graceful pose. He subtly builds layers of detail on the canvas; highly developing the intricacies of her head while allowing just enough descriptive lines to fully capture her figure.
Yeo’s print portfolio ‘Some People’ (2012) revisited some of his most intriguing sitters. Often his subjects emerge from an anonymous background unencumbered by accoutrements associated with traditional portraiture allowing their personalities and alluring characteristics to freely emerge. The portfolio employs a range of media to create a diverse collection of portraiture. He captures his sitters through photographs, etchings and hand finished inkjet prints, each revealing part of his artistic process as their features materialise in each print.
His work has been widely exhibited in the UK, USA, and Europe and is featured in prestigious collections including the Royal Collection, the National Portrait Gallery and the House of Commons art collection.
Jonathan Yeo was born in 1970. He lives and works in London. His recent major exhibition ‘Jonathan Yeo Portraits’ toured at the National Portrait Gallery, London, The Lowry, Salford and The Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. He is exhibiting in a major solo museum show at Frederiksborg Castle, Denmark which will run through 30th June 2016.
